Drivers heading through downtown Dallas this weekend will find Interstate 30 shut down in both directions for more than a day, as the Texas Department of Transportation continues work on its I-30 Canyon project.

All eastbound and westbound lanes of I-30 between the I-35E and I-45/US 75 interchanges are set to close at 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, and stay closed until 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26, according to a TxDOT alert reported by CultureMap Dallas on Wednesday.

The detour

Signs will direct drivers to State Highway 366, Woodall Rodgers Freeway, as the east-west route between I-35E and I-45/US 75 while the interstate is closed. TxDOT expects significant delays and is asking drivers to stay out of the area if they can. The agency also asked motorists to slow down, put away distractions and watch for crews and slower traffic in work zones.

A long rebuild

The closure is part of the I-30 Canyon improvements, an $888 million reconstruction between the I-35E and I-45 interchanges. TxDOT expects the whole project to be finished in 2031, according to the alert.

Several streets that cross the highway are already affected and will stay that way for some time:

  • Cesar Chavez Boulevard is closed and detoured at I-30 through late 2028.
  • Akard Street is closed and detoured at I-30 through summer 2028.
  • Good Latimer Expressway is down to one lane each way at I-30 through early 2028.
  • Cadiz Street is closed at I-30 and will reopen later in the project on a new alignment.

Detours to nearby streets are marked, and pedestrians are not allowed inside the closed work zones. TxDOT says it will post future lane and ramp closures for the project at DriveTexas.org.
