The North Texas Municipal Water District's replacement of the big water line under Custer Road is now expected to run into next spring.
In a project update posted Friday, Oct. 23, the district put the target completion date at May 1, 2027. Its Oct. 9 update had listed Dec. 25, 2026. The district says the schedule is under review because more paving restoration is needed than the contract originally covered.
District staff are listed to give a 30-minute status report on the Custer Road water main at the City Council's preliminary open meeting, which starts at 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 26.
Where the work stands
According to the update, crews have laid 9,050 of the project's 9,100 feet of pipe, and the bore beneath the President George Bush Turnpike, beside its northbound lanes, is done. Grouting and backfill are finished inside Plano's city limits, and crews have completed paving through Pitman and Dolphin and moved on to Custer Road.
Crews began the permanent Custer paving at Plano Parkway, working in the right lane, and are heading north toward Dolphin Drive. Side streets and alleys from The Hope Center up to Westridge Drive will be shut for short stretches, one after another, as the fresh concrete cures.
The district now expects all three northbound lanes of Custer to have permanent concrete by the end of January 2027, if the weather cooperates, a month later than the end-of-December estimate in its previous update.
The district says it has handed out door hangers to homes whose trash pickup will be affected, and temporary signs with pickup instructions will move along with the crews.
