Wyatt Langford reached base, moved up, and scored - twice - and the Texas Rangers never trailed the Tampa Bay Rays.
Langford doubled into the left-field corner in the fourth and scored on Justin Foscue's single for a 1-0 lead. In the eighth he scored again when Evan Carter, pinch-hitting, tripled to right. Those two runs bookended a 6-0 shutout Thursday night at Globe Life Field that pushed Texas to 70-71.
ESPN's box lists Langford at 1-for-3 with a double, two runs, a walk, and a strikeout, lifting his average to .252.
Table-setter, not the headline act
Langford did not drive in a run. He did not need to. Foscue's single, Corey Seager's two-run homer in the fifth, and Carter's triple all used him as the runner in motion or the catalyst on base. Seager's blast - 403 feet to right-center per ESPN - followed Ezequiel Durán's RBI single and made it 4-0. ESPN's box tags the homer as Seager's 14th; CBS Sports lists it as his 13th. Jake Burger's sacrifice fly after Carter's triple completed the eighth.
Pitching that rewarded every baserunner
Cal Quantrill (7-5) threw seven scoreless innings with two hits, two walks, and five strikeouts. The Associated Press put his ERA at 1.25 over eight outings since July 28 at Tampa Bay and 1.77 in seven career starts against the Rays. Jakob Junis and Chase Silseth finished Texas' 13th shutout of the season.
Shane McClanahan (10-7) allowed four runs in five innings and has not lasted six since July 8, the AP said.
The Rays managed three hits, matching a season low, and were shut out for the eighth time. They have lost 10 consecutive games at Globe Life Field; their last win there was June 2, 2022, per the AP. Attendance was 26,507.
