A chef whose career helped carry Indian cooking into Michelin-rated dining rooms is spending the weekend in a Plano kitchen.
Atul Kochhar began a three-night residency at Jashan, 7401 Lone Star Drive, Suite B120, on Saturday. Kochhar led the kitchen at Tamarind in London when it won a Michelin star in 2001, a first for an Indian chef, and his later London restaurant, Benares, received its own star in 2007.
Saturday's opener had Kochhar taking over Jashan's tasting-menu service with a seven-course menu of his own, which replaced the restaurant's usual Jashan 101 and Taste of India menus for the night. Two dinners remain, and each is built differently.
Sunday: five chefs, one table
Tonight's "10 Hands - The Sunday Supper" puts Kochhar in the kitchen with Jashan founder and chef Prasanna Singaraju and chefs Akshraj Jodha, Ashish Bhasin and Ramesh Thangaraj. The menu is served family style, with plates meant to be passed down the table. Seating is capped at 60, and tickets are $160 a person before tax and gratuity.
Monday: 20 seats
The residency closes Monday, Oct. 5, with "Dil Se," a Hindi phrase the restaurant translates as "from the heart." Kochhar and Singaraju will cook together for a single seating of 20 guests at $225 each, plus tax and gratuity.
Singaraju has described Kochhar as one of the chefs who shaped his own ambitions long before he had a restaurant. On the event page, he wrote that he never imagined the two would one day cook a dinner together for guests at his own table.
