Toyota opened its Battery Center of North America in Saline, Michigan, on Oct. 1, expanding the testing and development capabilities of its Michigan battery teams, the company announced.
The 30,000-square-foot center will evaluate batteries for Toyota’s North Carolina battery plant and vehicle factories across North America. Toyota said the work covers the battery-development cycle, including raw materials, vehicle applications and recycling.
Engineers and technicians at the facility assess battery performance and develop technology for hybrids, plug-in hybrids, hydrogen vehicles and fully electric vehicles. Toyota also plans to provide facility and research access through the University of Michigan Electric Vehicle Center, allowing other research partners to use its testing capabilities.
The Saline center is part of Toyota’s North American research and development operations, which are centered in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Toyota Motor North America has its headquarters in Plano.
