Arizona's Struggles Continue
The Arizona Diamondbacks found themselves unable to generate enough offense against the Houston Astros, falling 3-1 on Saturday at Daikin Park. Despite a brief spark in the fourth inning, the visiting team could not overcome a deficit established in the third, leaving them with their second consecutive loss as they look to stabilize their standing.
Arizona’s starting pitcher Merrill Kelly worked six innings but struggled with consistency. He allowed seven hits and three earned runs while striking out four batters. The damage came primarily in the third inning when Houston loaded the bases against him.
Although he managed to escape the jam by retiring the side in order after the initial scoring plays, the deficit proved too large for his Arizona teammates to erase.
Key Moments Define the Game
The turning point arrived in the top of the third inning. Yainer Diaz launched a 383-foot home run to left-center field, giving Houston an early 1-0 lead. The momentum shifted further when Alex Bregman doubled to left, driving in Jeremy Peña to make it 2-0. Jose Altuve then added insurance with a sacrifice fly to left, extending the lead to 3-0.
Arizona finally responded in the bottom of the fourth. Corbin Carroll homered to left-center field, a 387-foot shot that cut the deficit to 3-1. However, the Diamondbacks’ offense went silent thereafter, unable to produce another run against the Houston bullpen.
