Houston’s Offensive Struggles Continue
The Houston Astros’ offensive woes deepened on Sunday as they were overwhelmed by a powerful Chicago White Sox lineup at Rate Field. Despite early resistance, the Astros could not contain Chicago’s power display, ultimately falling 12-3. The loss dropped Houston’s record to 52-55, while the White Sox improved to 55-49.
Houston’s starting pitcher, Ronel Blanco, attempted to keep the team in the game but faced significant pressure from the outset. Blanco pitched 5.1 innings, allowing five hits and five earned runs, including two home runs from Chicago’s Murakami. He struck out four batters but walked three before being pulled from the contest.
The Astros’ bullpen could not stem the tide, allowing seven more runs across the final three innings.
Murakami Dominates with Two Home Runs
Murakami was the centerpiece of Chicago’s offensive explosion, delivering a career-defining performance against his former club. He hit two home runs and drove in six runs, providing the firepower needed to dismantle Houston’s pitching staff.
Murakami’s first home run came in the first inning, a 385-foot shot to left field that also scored Antonacci, giving Chicago a 2-1 lead. His second home run arrived in the eighth inning, a 398-foot drive to right center that extended the lead to 12-3.
Between those home runs, Murakami contributed significantly with a seventh-inning single that scored two runs, further highlighting his impact on the game.
White Sox Offense Explodes in the Seventh
Chicago’s offense found its rhythm early and never looked back. Peña opened the scoring in the first inning with a 393-foot home run to left, giving the White Sox an initial 1-0 advantage. Peña added another home run in the third inning, a 394-foot shot to right center, tying the game at 2-2 before Murakami’s RBI groundout put Chicago ahead 3-2.
The White Sox offense exploded in the seventh inning, scoring six runs to break the game open. Meidroth started the inning with a 382-foot home run to left center. Murakami followed with a single that scored two runs, and Benintendi added another run with a single to left field.
The inning continued with Perez hitting a 376-foot home run to left, scoring Meidroth, before Murakami’s second home run capped the surge.
Bullpen Performance Seals the Win
Chicago’s bullpen held Houston scoreless for the remainder of the game, securing the 12-3 victory. Sean Newcomb earned the win, pitching 0.2 innings with no earned runs allowed. Grant Taylor recorded the save, striking out two batters in 1.0 scoreless inning. Chris Murphy and Seranthony Dominguez also contributed scoreless innings, with Murphy striking out two and Dominguez striking out one.
Houston’s bullpen struggled to contain Chicago’s hitters. Enyel De Los Santos allowed two earned runs in 1.0 inning, while Bryan King gave up two earned runs in 0.2 innings. Miguel Ullola pitched 1.0 inning, allowing three earned runs.
The Astros’ inability to stop Chicago’s offense, combined with their own lack of production, resulted in a decisive loss at Rate Field, where 32,581 fans witnessed the White Sox dominate the series.
