Trailing Effort
The Houston Astros found themselves chasing runs for much of Monday at Petco Park, ultimately falling 7-2 to the San Diego Padres. Despite a solid start from Cristian Javier, the visiting club could not keep pace with San Diego’s explosive offensive display, which was highlighted by a pivotal three-run blast from Fernando Tatis Jr.
Javier took the mound for Houston, delivering five innings of work. He allowed eight hits and four earned runs, striking out two batters while issuing one walk. His performance earned him the loss, dropping his record to 1-3 on the season. The Padres’ offense capitalized on his outing, building an early lead that would prove insurmountable.
Offensive Explosion
San Diego jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the second inning when Varsho homered to right-center field, a 395-foot shot that also drove in Trammell. Houston responded later in the same frame with a Merrill home run to center field, narrowing the deficit to 2-1.
However, the momentum shifted decisively in the fourth inning when Tatis Jr. launched a 421-foot home run to left field. The blast was a three-run homer, bringing in Rengifo and Fermin, and giving the Padres a 4-2 lead they would not relinquish.
The Padres continued to add to their tally throughout the game. In the sixth inning, Sheets hit a 393-foot home run to right field, extending the lead to 5-2. The scoring was capped off in the eighth inning when newcomer Austin Hays hit a 361-foot home run to left field, driving in Bowen for a final 7-2 advantage.
The five home runs in the game underscored the high-offense nature of the contest.
