Struggles Continue in Houston
The Houston Astros suffered a 3-1 defeat to the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday at Daikin Park, extending Tampa Bay's winning streak to nine games. Despite a strong pitching performance from Spencer Arrighetti, the Astros could not overcome a quiet offensive night, managing only a single run against the Rays' bullpen and starting pitcher combination.
Houston found itself trailing early in the sixth inning when Tampa Bay's Fortes launched a 391-foot home run to left center. The blast gave the Rays a 1-0 lead. The Astros responded immediately in the same inning, with Alvarez connecting on a 427-foot shot to right center to tie the game at 1-1. However, the momentum shifted again in the seventh when Tampa Bay's Caminero hit a 374-foot home run to left, restoring the Rays' advantage at 2-1.
Late Rally Falls Short
Houston attempted to mount a comeback in the eighth inning but could only manage one more run. Fortes doubled to center field, driving in Walls to make the score 3-1. That proved to be the final scoring play of the game, as the Astros' bats went quiet for the remainder of the contest.
The loss drops Houston to 43-47 on the season. The Astros' offense was stifled by Tampa Bay's pitching staff, which held Houston to just two hits over the final two innings after Arrighetti exited. The Rays' bullpen was flawless in relief, with Kevin Kelly earning the win, Casey Legumina securing the save, and Bryan Baker recording his 23rd save of the year.
