A Late Surge Changes Everything
The UCF Knights entered the final period of play trailing by three points, but a dominant fourth-quarter performance by the Houston Cougars turned a competitive contest into a decisive victory. On Saturday at TDECU Stadium in Houston, Texas, the home team overcame an early deficit to defeat the visiting Knights 27-17 before a crowd of 25,593.
Houston’s comeback was driven by quarterback Conner Weigman, who orchestrated two critical scoring drives in the second half. After UCF held a 10-0 lead at halftime, Houston erupted for 14 points in the third quarter to take their first lead of the game. The Cougars added eight more points in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
First Half: Knights Control the Tempo
UCF established dominance early, capitalizing on offensive efficiency to build a comfortable margin. In the opening period, quarterback Keyone Jenkins connected with Josh Derry on a 13-yard pass, followed by a kick from Will Stone, giving the visitors a 7-0 advantage.
The Knights extended their lead in the second quarter when Stone nailed a 30-yard field goal, pushing the score to 10-0. Despite Houston’s efforts to respond, neither team managed to cross the goal line for a touchdown before the break. UCF’s defense held firm, limiting the Cougars’ progress and allowing the Knights to carry a double-digit lead into halftime.
Third Quarter: Houston Strikes Back
The momentum shifted dramatically in the third quarter when Jenkins took matters into his own hands, rushing for a 5-yard touchdown to narrow the gap to 10-7. However, Houston immediately answered with a flurry of offensive production. Weigman threw back-to-back touchdown passes, including a 19-yard strike and a 1-yard connection, both converted by kicker Jonathan Dimas.
