Plano ISD is asking families to leave the car at home on Wednesday, Oct. 7, and get to school on foot, on a bike or on wheels.

The district is taking part in National Walk, Bike and Roll to School Day together with the North Central Texas Council of Governments. On its event page, the district says the day is meant to promote healthy habits, a cleaner environment and safe routes to and from school, and to build community and school spirit by having students, parents and staff travel together.

When to leave

Plano ISD suggests setting out about 30 minutes before the school day begins. The recommended start times are:

  • 7:10 a.m. for elementary schools
  • 7:55 a.m. for middle schools
  • 8:30 a.m. for high schools

Planned routes

Safety routes have been mapped for participants within a two-mile radius of each campus. Families who live farther out are encouraged to carpool, park near the edge of that two-mile area and finish the trip on foot, bike or other wheels.

Because the district's boundaries cross city lines, the route maps come from more than one city. The Plano ISD page links to safety route maps from the City of Plano, the City of Richardson and the City of Murphy, along with a resource page from the council of governments.

Plano Magazine, which reported the event Sept. 30, noted the district shared the plans in a news release.
