A United States Army soldier originally from Plano, Texas, played a key role in rescuing 21 passengers whose tour bus overturned in South Korea. Spc. Karan Sharma was part of a group of U.S. service members visiting the Korean Demilitarized Zone in Paju when the incident occurred on June 20.
The group was traveling on their own bus to lunch when they observed another vehicle struggling on a wet roadway with a steep incline. That bus lost control, slid down the hill, and flipped over, leaving the occupants trapped inside.
Sharma and his fellow service members immediately exited their vehicle and approached the overturned bus. They used force to break through the windshield, allowing them to reach and free the passengers who were stuck within the wreckage.
Before local emergency responders arrived on the scene, the service members provided initial aid to several passengers who had sustained injuries during the crash. Their actions helped stabilize the situation until professional help could take over.
U.S. Air Force Maj. Laura Hayden of Osan Air Base highlighted the group's reaction. She stated that their quick thinking and selfless response prevented the situation from becoming more tragic.
