SpaceX is set to establish a semiconductor manufacturing plant in Grimes County, as announced by Governor Greg Abbott and CEO Elon Musk. The project, named Terafab, is projected to exceed $16.8 billion and create approximately 3,000 jobs in its first phase.
The facility will cover 100 million square feet, making it one of the largest manufacturing sites globally. It will integrate chip design, logic, memory, and advanced packaging in one location, a departure from the current industry practice of distributing these processes across various suppliers.
The chips produced will be utilized in Tesla's Optimus humanoid robots, Cybercab driverless vehicles, and processors for SpaceX's satellite-based data centers. The state has provided a $30 million grant from the Texas Enterprise Fund and has approved tax incentives for the project.
However, there is a notable discrepancy between the state's announced investment figure and a SpaceX filing from May, which proposed an initial investment of $55 billion, potentially rising to $119 billion. The two figures may refer to different aspects of the project, but the lack of clarity on this matter raises questions regarding the incentives provided.
Grimes County's rural nature means the workforce will likely come from surrounding areas, including Bryan-College Station, which is equipped with housing and educational resources to accommodate the influx of workers. Texas A&M is also developing a Semiconductor Institute to support workforce training in the region.
