As the Dallas Cowboys gear up for their second preseason matchup against the Arizona Cardinals, the competition for the backup quarterback position has become a focal point. With Dak Prescott and most starters not participating in the exhibition games, Sam Howell and Joe Milton are vying for the QB2 role. Howell started the first preseason game against Seattle, followed by Milton in the second half.

Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer noted that Howell's consistency in practice influenced the decision to start him, while Milton showcased significant improvement during the game.

Concerns have been raised regarding right tackle Terence Steele, who has struggled with consistency in his performance. Coach Schottenheimer acknowledged the need for Steele to improve, as he has faced challenges in recent practices. Offensive coordinator Clayton Adams also emphasized the importance of finding ways to help Steele enhance his game as he enters his seventh season.

In the running back department, Jaydon Blue, who was previously seen as a frontrunner for the backup position, is currently sidelined due to a shoulder injury. His effectiveness in the exhibition opener was limited, and his status for the upcoming game against Arizona remains uncertain, as the team is actively monitoring his condition.

Additionally, safety Jalen Thompson experienced a notable moment during joint practices with the New Orleans Saints, where he was body slammed by a Saints player. This incident drew attention, particularly since Thompson, as a starter, is not expected to participate in the preseason games, making it one of the few opportunities for him to engage with players from another team before the regular season begins.

As the Cowboys approach their next game, the outcomes of these positional battles and the performance of key players will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike.
