Tommy Castellanos’ role at Texas Tech remains uncertain after two games that included three touchdowns and an interception on an attempted throwaway. Red Raiders Wire reported that the veteran passer has been used alongside starting quarterback Will Hammond, with results ranging from productive plays to costly mistakes.
Castellanos started against Houston and threw an interception on the opening play. He later returned in a red-zone package and scored on a 3-yard run in the second quarter. Coach Joey McGuire said after the game that Hammond continues to be the starting quarterback, while Castellanos will have designated packages.
Castellanos joined Texas Tech late in preseason camp as an emergency backup. The move came after the transfer portal closed and Brendan Sorsby’s situation was resolved, while Hammond continues to recover from a torn ACL.
Sports Illustrated writer Pat Forde listed Castellanos’ season as one of 10 questions that could shape the year. Red Raiders Wire also reported that Texas Tech’s offensive struggles could increase the importance of how effectively Castellanos is used, particularly in the red zone.
