The Dallas Cowboys began their preparations for the 2026 regular season on Monday, practicing in closed sessions not open to the public. Local media observed the early parts of individual drills, but left guard Tyler Smith was notably absent from the practice field.
Smith was not participating in individual drills and was also not seen with the rehab group, raising questions about his status as the team moves closer to their first game. He has been a key player for the Cowboys, starting all 63 games in his first four seasons and earning three Pro Bowl selections.
In addition to his Pro Bowl honors, Smith was recognized as a second-team All-Pro in 2023, marking his first year primarily at left guard. He has also filled in at left tackle when needed, particularly during times when Tyler Guyton has faced injuries.
Smith plays a crucial role in protecting quarterback Dak Prescott, and his absence could impact the starting lineup for the upcoming matchup against the New York Giants. Should he be unable to play, TJ Bass is expected to step in as his replacement.
