The Dallas Cowboys are navigating challenging roster decisions, particularly at the running back position. Coach Brian Schottenheimer noted that the team has retained Javonte Williams, Malik Davis, and Hunter Luepke, while releasing 2025 draft picks Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah.
On Monday, the Cowboys added running back Emari Demercado, who was claimed off waivers from Kansas City. Schottenheimer highlighted Demercado's special teams capabilities and his previous connection with offensive coordinator Klayton Adams as key reasons for the acquisition.
Regarding the potential return of Blue and Mafah to the practice squad, Schottenheimer stated that there are no guarantees. He conveyed to both players that their future with the team was uncertain. "Not sure that it would go that direction. And that's as honest as I could be with them," Schottenheimer said.
The decision not to retain either Blue or Mafah for the practice squad has raised eyebrows, especially since the Cowboys have signed 13 players to that unit, including running back Israel Abanikanda.
An NFL team can have up to 16 players on the practice squad, with an exemption for one additional player if they have someone in the International Player Pathway program, which the Cowboys do with defensive tackle Dayo Odeleye.
