The Dallas Cowboys have parted ways with running back Jaydon Blue, a former standout at the University of Texas, as they move away from their 'Thunder and Lightning' concept in the backfield. Blue's release comes as the Cowboys have added Emari Demercado, a former Arizona Cardinals player, to their roster.
Blue, who was a fifth-round pick in 2025, faced challenges during his rookie season, which contributed to his departure from Dallas. Despite his speed, evidenced by a 4.38-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine, his future with the Cowboys appeared uncertain. Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer indicated that there would be no opportunity for Blue to return to the practice squad.
Following his release, Blue was signed by the Philadelphia Eagles and will join their practice squad. The Eagles are expected to benefit from his speed and potential, although the Cowboys hope he does not reach his full capabilities while playing for their rival.
In contrast, Demercado brings experience and a strong performance history to the Cowboys. He averaged 6.5 yards per carry during his time with the Cardinals and has been recognized for his power running and special teams contributions. Cowboys offensive coordinator Klayton Adams, who previously coached Demercado in Arizona, is familiar with his abilities.
