The Dallas Cowboys are facing challenges as they prepare for their season opener against the New York Giants, with Pro Bowl left guard Tyler Smith set to miss at least four weeks due to thumb surgery. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer announced the news, stating that T.J.
Bass will step in during Smith's absence, who is expected to return later in the season to bolster the offensive line.
In a recent radio appearance on 105.3 The Fan, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones hinted at the possibility of making a trade to enhance the team's defense. Following the restructuring of several player contracts last week, which created $19 million in salary-cap space, Jones expressed that the team is in a position to pursue trades.
He noted, "if you look at it generally speaking, we're in play," regarding potential roster additions.
Jones indicated that the defense is the primary focus for any potential trades, despite a busy offseason that included hiring a new defensive coordinator and drafting two defenders in the first round. The Cowboys recently restructured contracts for defensive tackle Kenny Clark, cornerback DaRon Bland, and tight end Jake Ferguson, which did not change their salaries but allowed for more financial flexibility moving forward.
While Jones did not confirm if the recent contract adjustments were directly linked to trade plans, he acknowledged the significance of the newly available cap space. He mentioned that the Cowboys could utilize this financial room to strengthen the current roster, stating, "we could use it for this year's team."
