The Dallas Cowboys have made the decision to cut cornerback Josh Butler from their 53-man roster, marking the end of his three-year tenure with the team. Butler's journey to the Cowboys included stints in two spring football leagues before he joined the roster in 2023.
Following his release, Butler took to social media to express his pride in his performance, stating that he had never allowed a touchdown or a pass over 20 yards during his time with the Cowboys.
He highlighted his achievements, mentioning that he successfully revived his football career after a four-year hiatus post-college, stating, "Did the impossible rekindling my football career after 4 years out of college. Made history! & so much more. I'm super grateful for my hometown team love yall forever."
During the preseason, Butler performed well, recording six tackles and demonstrating his skills as a shutdown corner. Over the last three seasons, he participated in six games, all during 2024 and 2025, after missing the 2023 season due to an ACL injury. In those games, he accumulated 26 tackles, five pass deflections, and one sack.
Despite his solid preseason performance, Butler faced stiff competition at the cornerback position, which contributed to his release. The Cowboys may consider him for their practice squad, given his contributions as a depth player, though it remains uncertain if another NFL team will claim him.
