The Dallas Cowboys announced the release of quarterback Joe Milton on Monday. Milton joined the team in April 2025 after being acquired from the New England Patriots in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2025 draft. He had been competing for the backup quarterback position against Sam Howell during the offseason.
Milton's release coincided with the Cowboys claiming running back Emari Demercado off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs, making Milton the corresponding roster move to accommodate Demercado on the 53-man roster. During his time with the Cowboys, Milton played in three preseason games, completing 29 of 43 passes for a total of 378 yards and three touchdowns, with no interceptions.
He also contributed 12 carries for 14 rushing yards and one touchdown.
Last week, Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer expressed confidence in both Milton and Howell as capable backups. He recalled a conversation with Milton where the quarterback demonstrated self-belief, stating, "Coach, it doesn't matter who you bring in here, I believe in myself." Schottenheimer noted the challenges of learning the team's complex offensive system, which requires a strong understanding from players, particularly at the quarterback position.
Milton had previously expressed that he felt more comfortable with the Cowboys' offense after a full season and training camp, stating, "You get to do a lot more... Just being able to go through that process of a whole year being in this offense to now, it's great."
