Head coach Brian Schottenheimer noted that Howell initially had an advantage over Milton, but Milton has made significant strides in recent performances. "If you would just take the training camp competition, it's probably neck and neck, and Sam maybe a little bit ahead," Schottenheimer stated on August 24. However, he acknowledged Milton's impressive play, indicating that the competition remains tight.
As the Cowboys consider their options, there is speculation that they may opt to keep only two quarterbacks on the roster, which would require cutting a player from another position to maintain depth. USA Today's Ben Grimaldi predicts that Howell may be released, with Milton taking the backup role.
Howell, a veteran with experience as the former starter for the Washington Commanders, has played in 20 NFL games, including 18 starts. He is under a one-year, fully guaranteed contract worth $2.5 million, meaning the Cowboys would incur that cost even if they choose to cut him.
While some analysts, including ESPN's Todd Archer, suggest that the Cowboys might retain both quarterbacks, the decision is complicated by the need for roster balance at other positions.
