Baylor quarterback DJ Lagway is considered doubtful to play against Louisiana Tech on Saturday as he continues recovering from an ankle injury. His status has improved for the Bears’ Big 12 opener against Colorado on Sept. 26, with On3’s Pete Nakos reporting that Lagway is trending toward being available for that game.
Lagway sustained a high-ankle sprain during Baylor’s season-opening 17-16 defeat against Auburn. He remained in the game and finished with 333 passing yards, two touchdown passes and one interception. A wrap was visible on his ankle afterward.
The injury kept Lagway out of Baylor’s next game against Prairie View A&M. Nate Bennett started in his place and completed 24 of 36 passes for 314 yards in a 44-3 Baylor victory. Bennett also threw three touchdowns and added a rushing score.
If Lagway cannot play Louisiana Tech, Bennett is expected to start for a second straight game. Baylor coach Dave Aranda said Lagway felt good during a Sunday practice, and the quarterback was expected to take part in team practices during the week.
Lagway’s availability for Colorado will depend on his recovery over the coming days. The matchup is scheduled for Sept. 26, when Colorado visits Baylor for the Bears’ first Big 12 game of the season. The game is set to begin at 10 a.m. Mountain time.
