BJ Edwards, who played for the SMU Mustangs, has committed to the Oklahoma Sooners. This decision was reported by Joe Tipton of On3. Edwards is eligible for an additional season of college basketball due to a five-for-five temporary injunction that grants another year of eligibility to the 2022 recruiting class.
Edwards spent three seasons at SMU in Dallas after transferring from the University of Tennessee, where he played only 14 games. At SMU, he played under two head coaches, Rob Lanier and Andy Enfield, and remained a key player despite coaching changes.
His most successful season was last year, where he averaged 12.7 points per game, along with 5.9 rebounds and 4.9 assists, while shooting 47.4% from the field. He also earned All-Conference defensive team honors in the ACC, averaging 2.4 steals per game in the 2024-2025 season and 2.3 steals in the 2025-2026 season.
Although SMU wanted to keep him, Edwards opted to join head coach Porter Moser in Norman. The Sooners are looking to enhance their roster after a season that ended with a 21-16 record and a 7-11 mark in SEC play, missing the NCAA Tournament. Edwards' addition is seen as a significant boost for the team's competitiveness in the upcoming winter season.
