Marist Liufau, an outside linebacker for the Dallas Cowboys, is set to undergo surgery for a fractured forearm, which will sideline him for several weeks. The injury occurred during the Cowboys' preseason game against the New Orleans Saints, specifically late in the first quarter while he was making a tackle, as reported by head coach Brian Schottenheimer.
Schottenheimer expressed confidence in Liufau's competitive spirit, stating, "What a great competitor. He'll be back." Liufau has been a consistent player for the Cowboys, participating in all 34 games since being drafted in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft from Notre Dame.
Entering his third season, Liufau transitioned from inside linebacker to outside linebacker under the guidance of defensive coordinator Christian Parker. He acknowledged the challenges of adapting to a new position but expressed gratitude for the support from his teammates and coaches.
Last season, Liufau significantly increased his involvement in special teams, playing 75% of the snaps compared to 35% in his rookie year. He understands the critical role special teams play in securing roster spots, stating, "I'm going all out, giving it [my] all, and not having any pride."
Schottenheimer noted the impact of Liufau's absence on the team, emphasizing his importance across all special teams units. The coach remarked, "Losing Marist as a football player is tough. Unfortunately, it's part of the business."
