The SMU Mustangs are looking to bolster their wide receiver lineup with the addition of Jalen Hale, who transferred from Alabama, and Yannick Smith, who comes from East Carolina. This move follows the graduation of their top two receivers from last season, Jordan Hudson and Romello Brinson, who collectively recorded over 1,400 receiving yards and nine touchdowns.

Quarterback Kevin Jennings is currently recovering from a hand injury, which has limited his ability to work with several essential offensive players, including tight ends Matthew Hibner and RJ Maryland, along with running backs TJ Harden and Chris Johnson Jr. Despite these setbacks, Hale and Smith have shown promise in their potential contributions.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Ty Hawkins has praised Smith for his ability to make contested catches, attributing this to his size, while he highlighted Hale’s speed and knack for evading defenders. Hale, a former five-star recruit, had a strong start at Alabama but missed the entire 2024 season due to a serious knee injury.

He has since returned to form at SMU, demonstrating his explosive playmaking skills.

Wide receivers coach Rob Likens noted Hale's SEC experience and toughness as assets for the team's offensive strategy. Smith, who recorded over 1,000 receiving yards and eight touchdowns during his time at East Carolina, is recognized for his aggressive playing style and ability to make challenging catches.

As the Mustangs prepare for their season opener against Florida State on September 7, they are concentrating on developing team chemistry and finalizing their depth chart. Senior Yamir Knight, who excelled in the Holiday Bowl as Offensive MVP, and sophomore Jalen Cooper, expected to take on a larger role after a successful freshman season, will also contribute to the team’s efforts.

Cornerbacks coach Kyle Ward remarked on the competitive environment fostered by Hale and Smith, indicating that their addition is enhancing the overall performance of the Mustangs' offense.
