TCU is on the lookout for a new starting quarterback after Josh Hoover's unexpected transfer to Indiana, the reigning national champions. This change follows a regular season where TCU ended with an 8-4 record, a season that had sparked hopes for a strong Big 12 championship run and potential NFL draft opportunities.
Before Hoover's announcement, TCU's personnel team had already begun identifying quarterback prospects, not expecting his departure. General manager Ryan Dorchester emphasized that Hoover was considered a key player for the upcoming season. However, they had started scouting quarterbacks as a precaution in case he decided to enter the NFL draft.
The Horned Frogs are particularly interested in recruiting an upperclassman with one year of eligibility left, as they see high school signee Adam Schobel as their long-term solution at quarterback. Following Hoover's transfer confirmation, TCU quickly signed Jaden Craig, a former zero-star recruit who performed well at Harvard for two seasons.
Dorchester first became aware of Craig while reviewing film of a former Harvard receiver and described him as efficient and decisive, with a strong arm. Despite Hoover's solid performance during the season, he did not generate significant NFL draft interest, leading TCU's coaching staff to believe he would stay.
However, head coach Sonny Dykes noted a shift in Hoover's mindset as the season concluded, suggesting a transfer was possible. Hoover officially informed Dykes of his decision on December 17, shortly after TCU's offensive coordinator accepted a position at South Carolina. As news of Hoover's exit spread, Dorchester connected with Craig's agent, facilitating a swift recruitment process for the former Harvard player.
