TCU Athletics has reinstated media credentials for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, resolving a conflict that arose after the newspaper reported on a locker room incident involving the dismissal of safety Jacob Fields. The university announced the restoration on September 4, following productive discussions with the outlet.
The dispute began after reporter Steven Johnson published an article on August 18 detailing tensions in the locker room and suggesting that coaches failed to address the situation adequately. It was reported that head coach Sonny Dykes was not aware of the seriousness of the issues among players.
TCU officials stated that the revocation of credentials was linked to alleged threats made against receiver Dozie Ezukanma, who was involved in an altercation with Fields.
The incident occurred on August 13, when Ezukanma claimed in an Instagram video that Fields punched him, resulting in a head injury. A TCU football staff member reported the matter to campus police the next day. Fields was subsequently dismissed from the team and charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury after turning himself in to Tarrant County police on August 30.
He was released later that day after posting a $50,000 bond. During the media access suspension, Johnson covered TCU's season opener from the stands in Dublin, Ireland, where the team lost to North Carolina 15-10.
