Texas Christian University (TCU) has reinstated media credentials for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, resolving a conflict that arose after the newspaper reported on a locker room altercation involving former TCU safety Jacob Fields and wide receiver Dozie Ezukanma.
The incident occurred on August 13, resulting in Fields' dismissal from the team and his arrest for aggravated assault that led to serious injuries for Ezukanma, who suffered a brain bleed and concussion and was hospitalized for three days.
TCU indicated that both parties had productive discussions and agreed to move forward, following a period of heightened scrutiny regarding the initial decision to revoke the Star-Telegram's credentials.
Concerns were raised by athletic director Mike Buddie, who stated that the reporting created a damaging narrative, leading to threats against Fields and his family. After the credential revocation, the Star-Telegram was barred from covering TCU athletic events, including the season opener against North Carolina in Dublin, but their reporter still covered the game without official credentials.
TCU's decision to restore the credentials is viewed as a necessary measure to redirect focus back to the football season, although the legal matters surrounding Fields and Ezukanma's injuries remain unresolved.
