The Houston Texans have made significant roster improvements during training camp, notably signing former No. 1 overall pick Jadeveon Clowney and Mario Edwards to bolster their defensive line. However, the team has not made any impactful changes to their wide receiver group, opting instead to rely on existing players.
With less than a month until the regular season begins, the Texans' chances of acquiring a notable wide receiver appear to be diminishing. Several top free agents have recently signed with other teams, including Deebo Samuel with the San Francisco 49ers, Stefon Diggs with the Washington Commanders, and Keenan Allen with the Indianapolis Colts, a division rival.
Currently, the remaining free agents, such as Tyreek Hill, Curtis Samuel, Brandin Cooks, Tyler Lockett, and DeAndre Hopkins, present uncertainties or may not significantly improve the Texans' receiving corps. Hill, in particular, is recovering from an ACL injury, making any potential signing unlikely.
The Texans may choose to maintain their current wide receiver depth, which includes promising players like Nico Collins, who is expected to lead the group, and Jayden Higgins, who could serve as a complementary target. Other players like Jaylin Noel, Xavier Hutchinson, and Tank Dell also add to the team's options.
Despite the absence of a major signing, the Texans are not in a state of panic. They have over $20 million in cap space available, which could be allocated to other needs if the current receiving options prove sufficient. The front office seems confident in the existing talent and may only pursue additional help if necessary as the season progresses.
