The Houston Texans have announced that they will not pursue contract negotiations with quarterback C.J. Stroud during the upcoming season if an agreement is not reached before their opener against the Buffalo Bills on September 13.
General manager Nick Caserio confirmed this decision on Tuesday, stating that all discussions will be paused until the next offseason if no deal is finalized by the start of the season. The Texans have already exercised Stroud's fifth-year option, ensuring he remains under contract through 2027.
Caserio had previously indicated that there was potential for an extension prior to the season, but it appears that a deal is not close to being finalized.
Stroud, who is 24 years old, has had a successful tenure with the Texans, boasting a record of 28-18 and leading the team to the playoffs in each of his first three seasons since being drafted second overall in 2023.
