Ericsson and MTN Group Fintech have announced the completion of the Mobile Money Evolved Migration across four key African markets. The initiative involves moving the MoMo digital financial platform from a legacy virtualised environment to a standardised cloud-native architecture built on the Ericsson Fintech Platform.
The companies state that this transition is designed to enhance platform performance and operational efficiency while providing a scalable foundation for MTN Group’s Ambition 2030 strategy.
The migration has been implemented in Eswatini, Ghana, Rwanda, and Uganda. According to the partners, the next phase of the project is currently underway in Cameroon. Additionally, active discussions are taking place to extend the same transformation to Benin, the Republic of the Congo, and Zambia.
The companies note that as demand for digital financial services grows across the continent, mobile money platforms require resilient infrastructure capable of handling increased transaction volumes while maintaining service availability.
Following the shift to the new architecture, MTN has reported a reduction in CPU processing overhead and database load of up to 86%. The deployment is described as establishing a high-availability platform that supports consistent experiences for consumers, merchants, and ecosystem partners.
The upgraded system is said to simplify operations and strengthen performance by reducing infrastructure overhead and improving API responsiveness, which facilitates faster integration for developers and partners.
