Parents of junior varsity band and drill team students in Plano are challenging new scheduling rules that shift their performance times from the traditional halftime slot to after the conclusion of football games.
The changes stem from a decision by the UIL District Executive Committee regarding Conference 6A alignment. In a letter dated August 24, officials explained that the previous practice of treating JV halftimes similarly to varsity events was being discontinued. Phillip Morgan, the Director of Fine Arts, cited issues with referee retention, student athlete physical consistency, and delays to non-varsity contests as reasons for the adjustment.
Under the new guidelines, when a Plano ISD team plays another Plano ISD team, the home band will perform a 14-minute halftime set, while the visiting band performs a 14-minute set after the game. For games against external districts, both bands and drill teams will perform after the match for up to 28 minutes total.
The district noted that all ninth and tenth-grade teams will still have the opportunity to perform at halftime during at least one game to ensure equity.
More than 3,000 parents and students signed a petition asking the committee to reconsider. Brian Blumenthal, a parent, argued that Texas football without a halftime performance resembles a scrimmage. He expressed concern that moving performances post-game diminishes morale and forces students to stay up late before school the next day.
Jennifer Tapp, another parent, stated she did not want students to feel like an afterthought. She noted that if parents are reacting strongly, the impact on the students must be significant.
