Plano ISD’s football teams are entering District 7-6A alongside Richardson ISD, reviving a district arrangement that had not included those groups together since 2007. Plano, Plano East and Plano West spent the previous six seasons in 6-6A with programs that included Allen, Prosper ISD and Lewisville ISD, and Coppell is also moving into the new district.
Coppell brings a run of three straight seasons with at least 10 wins, and Coppell and Plano met in last season’s bi-district round for Class 6A Division I. Plano ISD is seeking its first year with multiple football playoff qualifiers since 2014, while Richardson ISD’s Lake Highlands, Richardson, Berkner and Pearce have each made the postseason during the previous two years.
At Lumpkins Stadium, Coppell is scheduled to face Waxahachie on Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. Waxahachie is listed No. 1 in Class 6A and Coppell No. 12; their 2024 game ended with Coppell winning 28-27 in overtime after a 14-0 halftime deficit, and the 2025 meeting ended early because of weather with Waxahachie ahead 17-16 at halftime.
Plano East and Plano West play at Clark Stadium on Sept. 25 at 7 p.m., a matchup set for the second district week.
The teams traded four-game series runs during the 2010s, have divided the most recent six meetings evenly, and Plano West won 42-32 last season after the game was within four points in the third quarter before West scored on defense and special teams.
Two Oct. 16 games are listed: Coppell at Lake Highlands, scheduled for 7 p.m. at Wildcat-Ram Stadium, and Plano against Plano East at Kimbrough Stadium at 7 p.m. Coppell is the only 7-6A team in the state rankings cited in the article; Lake Highlands has an 18-year playoff streak and has reached the area round in each of the last three seasons.
