Allen rising junior Maya Ogbogu is preparing for a busy summer that includes representing the United States at the FIVB Girls U17 World Championships in Chile from Aug. 6-16. This international opportunity follows her participation last fall with the inaugural U.S. girls U17 national team at the NORCECA U17 Continental Championship in Costa Rica.

Ogbogu described the trip to Costa Rica as a significant experience that allowed her to compare playing styles across different countries. She expressed excitement about returning to the international circuit with her teammates, noting that anticipation for the upcoming world championships has been a central topic during recent camps and tournaments.

Before heading to Chile, Ogbogu is competing with her Texas Advantage Volleyball club team at the USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championships in Indianapolis. The event began June 25 and continues through Friday. This club competition occurs shortly after she made a verbal commitment to play college volleyball with Texas A&M.

Ogbogu, ranked as the No. 1 overall prospect in the country for the Class of 2018 by PrepDig, considered Texas and Stanford before finalizing her decision on June 16. She noted that the recruiting process moved quickly after the June 15 window opened for college programs to contact prospective recruits. Ogbogu attended camps at SMU, UT, and A&M to evaluate campus life and athletic programs before making her choice.

During her high school career, Ogbogu helped the Allen Lady Eagles reach the state semifinals as a freshman in 2024. She was named District 6-6A newcomer of the year that season. As a sophomore, she earned 6-6A hitter of the year honors after recording 444 kills, 59 blocks, 234 digs, 18 aces, and 425 receptions. Her team finished with a 37-7 record and shared the district championship.

Ogbogu missed Allen’s playoff run last season due to her commitment to the U.S. national team in Costa Rica. She stated she was disappointed to miss the postseason but acknowledged the team’s strong performance. She is currently focusing on improving her shot placement, serve-receive, and strength training as she approaches her junior year.

Allen is located approximately 6 miles north of Plano.
