Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux outlined the Dallas Police Department’s expanding use of aerial technology and strengthened regional partnerships to enhance public safety and operational efficiency. The chief highlighted these initiatives during an appearance on the June 29 episode of Let's Talk Local, hosted by Sarah Zubiate Bennett.

Comeaux emphasized that the department’s drone-as-first-responder program is designed to improve response times and assist officers in making critical decisions before arriving on scene. He explained that the technology allows dispatchers and supervisors to assess situations remotely, determining the appropriate number of officers needed for a given call. For example, in a reported altercation, a drone can reach the location within one to three minutes to verify if the incident is still active or if the threat level has escalated.

If the aerial footage indicates that a situation has resolved itself, officers can be redirected to other high-priority calls. Conversely, if the drone reveals a more dangerous scenario, responding units can approach with better situational awareness. Comeaux noted that this capability helps keep officers safer by providing real-time intelligence. The department currently operates approximately eight or nine active drones and aims to double or triple that fleet size by securing government grants.

Addressing privacy concerns often associated with police surveillance technology, Comeaux clarified that the drones do not continuously record video while flying. Recording only begins once the drone arrives at the specific location tied to a police call, a process he compared to the visual information an officer gathers upon arriving at a scene.

The chief also discussed safety preparations for upcoming FIFA events and the influx of visitors to North Texas. Dallas is about 18 miles south of Plano. Comeaux urged attendees to drink responsibly and stay hydrated, particularly those unfamiliar with the Texas heat. He stressed the importance of drinking water between alcoholic beverages to prevent heat-related issues.

Finally, Comeaux praised the collaborative relationship among federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies in the region. He stated that this cooperation is essential for keeping the area safe and that agencies work together effectively to address regional security needs. The full conversation regarding these topics is available on the Let's Talk Local program.
