The Dallas Cowboys will be without running back Malik Davis for their season opener against the New York Giants after he injured his hip during practice. Davis was taken from the field by cart after Friday’s session and was later ruled out of Sunday’s game.
Davis had been positioned to contribute in Dallas’ backfield after producing during the preseason. He carried 12 times for 68 yards, an average of 5.7 yards per attempt, and added a receiving touchdown. The injury came before the regular season began, leaving the Cowboys with fewer backfield choices.
ESPN’s Todd Archer reported that Davis would not play against New York and that he was receiving additional medical evaluation. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler later reported that Dallas was preparing for Davis to miss an extended period. One source told Fowler, “It’s bad.” The full severity and expected recovery timeline were not provided.
Javonte Williams is expected to remain Dallas’ lead running back. During the 2025 season, Williams started 16 games and recorded 1,201 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns on 252 carries. He also caught 35 passes for 137 yards and two scores.
Emari Demercado could receive more work behind Williams. Dallas claimed him from the Kansas City Chiefs’ waiver list on Sept. 1. Demercado previously spent three seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, where he totaled 819 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns on 126 carries, along with 50 receptions for 324 yards and one receiving touchdown.
