Baylor quarterback DJ Lagway has been ruled out for the team’s Week 2 matchup with Prairie View A&M after suffering a high-ankle sprain in the season opener against Auburn. Nate Bennett will start in his place, making the first start of his career.

Sports.yahoo.com reported that Lagway was initially considered doubtful for the game. Baylor coach Dave Aranda had described the quarterback as day-to-day earlier in the week, while a source told On3 that Lagway had been trying to play through the injury.

Lagway finished the loss to Auburn despite the ankle problem. He completed 27 of 54 passes for 333 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in Baylor’s 17-16 defeat.

Baylor scored a touchdown in the final seconds against Auburn and attempted a two-point conversion for the win, but the try failed. The source said Aranda has not indicated whether Lagway’s health affected that decision.

Baylor will host Louisiana Tech next weekend before beginning Big 12 play against Colorado on Sept. 26. The report did not provide a timetable for Lagway’s return.
