The two freeway signs on U.S. 75 that honor the late Congressman Sam Johnson could be replaced with new ones that also call him a prisoner of war, under a funding item that went before the region's transportation planners Thursday.
The Regional Transportation Council's Nov. 5 consent agenda included a staff request for about $25,000 in RTC Local funds to replace the two signs, according to the meeting agenda filed with the Dallas County clerk. The agenda says military veterans would cover half the cost and the council the other half, with the total expected to come in under $50,000.
The new signs would read "US Congressman and Prisoner of War Sam Johnson Memorial Highway." The North Central Texas Council of Governments would collect the money and pass it to the Texas Department of Transportation once the legislation is approved, the agenda says.
The bill behind it
That legislation is H.R. 4380, which U.S. Rep. Keith Self introduced on July 14, 2025. The bill text covers the portion of U.S. 75 between the President George Bush Turnpike and U.S. 380, a stretch now designated "Sam Johnson Highway," and would rename it the "U.S.
Congressman and Prisoner of War Sam Johnson Memorial Highway." On introduction it was referred to the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.
