Plano ISD's three volleyball teams spent district play trading wins with one another. In the area round, each one gets a very different test from outside the district.
Plano West draws Allen, Plano East gets a McKinney Boyd team coming off a five-set upset, and Plano faces a Wakeland team it already beat in August. The Wildcats, Panthers and Wolves all swept their bi-district matches Thursday.
Plano West vs. Allen
Plano West (27-7) has the highest-ranked opponent of the three, playing Allen on Monday in Class 6A Division I. Neither a start time nor a site was listed as of Saturday.
Allen is 38-2, went 12-0 in its district and is ranked fifth nationally by MaxPreps. Its only losses came at August tournaments, to McKinney Boyd on Aug. 15 and to Duncanville on Aug. 29. The Eagles beat Flower Mound 3-1 in their bi-district match, a rematch of their four-set win in the Aug. 10 season opener, according to GM Sports Media.
Plano West, third in District 7-6A at 10-4, allowed 35 points in its 25-12, 25-15, 25-8 sweep of Euless Trinity.
Plano East vs. Boyd
Plano East (30-11) also plays Monday, against a Boyd team that just eliminated Carrollton Hebron. The Broncos, ranked 34th nationally, beat the 16th-ranked Hawks 25-15, 25-17, 23-25, 19-25, 15-12 on Friday at The Colony High School to improve to 29-7.
That was Boyd's second five-set win over Hebron this season. It also owns one of Allen's two losses, though the Eagles won both district meetings between the two.
The Panthers and Broncos have not met this year. East finished second in 7-6A at 11-3 and beat South Grand Prairie 25-17, 25-23, 25-13 in the opening round.
Plano vs. Wakeland
Plano, the 7-6A champion, plays in Division II and meets Frisco Wakeland at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to both teams' MaxPreps schedules.
The Wildcats (34-8) beat Wakeland 2-0 at an Aug. 29 tournament. Their bi-district win over Haltom was the most lopsided of the three: 25-11, 25-3, 25-6.
Wakeland (23-18) swept Prosper on Thursday. The Wolverines finished third in District 5-6A at 10-4, and all four of their league losses came against Hebron and Flower Mound.
Familiar ground
None of the three Plano ISD teams got through the others unbeaten. Plano swept West on Sept. 11 and beat the Wolves again in five on Oct. 6. East also beat West twice, 3-0 and 3-2. Plano and East split, East winning 3-1 on Sept. 22 and Plano sweeping on Oct. 16.
