DeMarvion Overshown's Week 1 exit was not just another tackle for loss that never came. Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said Monday that the middle linebacker's hamstring issue is a strain - not a structural tear - and that the recovery window looks like one to two weeks, with "nothing long term" in the early read.
That medical clarity still leaves a harder football problem. Overshown wore the green-dot communicator in the opener and handled the defensive calls. Removing the primary signal-caller for even one game forces Dallas to reassign both the microphone and the middle-of-the-field tackling load before Sunday's home game against the Washington Commanders.
Winters first, then the rookies
Schottenheimer listed Dee Winters first among the linebacker options, calling him the most experienced of the group. Winters, acquired from San Francisco on Day 2 of the 2026 draft, played 40 defensive snaps in the Giants loss, Dallas Sports Journal reported.
Rookie Jaishawn Barham - a third-round pick out of Michigan - logged 34 defensive snaps in his first regular-season game. Schottenheimer said Barham "got some valuable play time," did "some good things," and also "some things that he needs to improve on." Shemar James mixed in a handful of defensive snaps alongside special-teams work and drew praise as "very smart, very bright."
The coach also named practice-squad elevation candidates: veteran Curtis Robinson and Justin Barron, a player Schottenheimer said the staff has "a lot of high expectations for." Those are not ornamental names. With Overshown sidelined and Malik Hooker headed for forearm surgery the same week, Dallas may need every available linebacker body on gameday.
Communication under a bad Week 1 clock
The Giants converted 9 of 11 third downs and controlled the ball for 36:40 while rushing for 165 yards. Overshown played 51 defensive snaps and recorded seven combined tackles before exiting with 12:04 left in the fourth quarter on a Cam Skattebo run, Dallas Sports Journal reported.
The defense's late-game shape after his exit is part of the tape study Schottenheimer has to turn into Wednesday's install.
