Ericsson has named Christophe Van de Weyer as the new head of its Global Communications Platform business area and chief executive officer of Vonage. The appointment is part of a leadership transition designed to advance the company’s strategy for network application programming interfaces and communications platform services.

Van de Weyer currently leads the API business unit at Vonage, which Ericsson purchased in 2022. He will also join the company’s Executive Team. Ericsson stated that his background includes driving progress in programmable networks, enterprise digital transformation, and profitable growth within Communications Platform as a Service and network APIs.

The change follows the departure of Niklas Heuveldop, who will step down from his dual roles on August 15. Heuveldop, who joined Ericsson in 1993 and has served on the executive team since 2016, oversaw the restructuring of Vonage and efforts to restore growth in the business. Ericsson noted that these initiatives strengthened performance and helped refocus the company’s communications platform strategy.

Heuveldop will remain available through the end of 2026 to assist with the transition. Ericsson CEO Börje Ekholm credited Van de Weyer with helping return the API business to growth and described the appointment as a planned succession process for key leadership positions.

Van de Weyer expressed that he sees further opportunities to combine artificial intelligence, data, and APIs with network capabilities to support enterprise customers and accelerate growth. Further details regarding the specific operational changes or financial impacts of this leadership shift were not provided in the source material.

Ericsson employs about 3,346 people in Plano, according to local government records.
