Toyota Motor Corp. revealed plans on Monday to invest $3.6 billion to expand its San Antonio facility, a move that will shift the majority of Tacoma pickup truck production from Mexico to the United States. The company intends to complete this transition over the next four years.

The expansion will add a second assembly line to the San Antonio plant, which currently manufactures Tundra pickups and Sequoia SUVs. This addition is projected to increase annual production capacity by 150,000 vehicles. The nearly $4 billion investment is estimated to create approximately 2,000 additional on-site jobs in Texas.

During the four-year transition period, the Tijuana, Mexico, facility will continue to produce Tacomas before Texas becomes the primary production site. The announcement follows a November 2025 statement from Toyota regarding plans to invest up to $10 billion in the U.S. over five years.

Ted Ogawa, president and CEO of Toyota Motor North America, stated that the investment reflects confidence in the region’s workforce and long-term growth potential. He described the expansion as a deepening of the company’s commitment to American manufacturing and sustainable job creation.

The shift comes as other automakers move production to the U.S. in response to tariffs on imported vehicles and auto parts. President Donald Trump praised the company’s plans in a post on Truth Social on Tuesday morning.

Details regarding the specific timeline for the second assembly line’s completion or the exact number of jobs created in Mexico during the transition were not provided.

Toyota Motor North America employs about 4,938 people in Plano, according to local government records.
