Plano is initiating a public engagement process regarding the potential transformation of The Shops at Willow Bend into a mixed-use development anchored by a new arena for the Dallas Stars. The city will host two in-person community open houses and a virtual session to allow residents to provide input on the proposal.
The first in-person session is scheduled for Wednesday, July 8, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the mall location. A second in-person meeting will take place on Tuesday, July 14, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Additionally, a self-guided virtual open house will be accessible online from July 8 through July 22.
Plano Deputy City Manager Doug McDonald described the events as the initial phase of the planning process. He stated that the sessions serve as listening opportunities for city staff, the development partner Centennial, and the Dallas Stars organization. The goal is to collect resident input, which will be reviewed by consultants to generate recommendations for future consideration.
The Wednesday event will include dedicated stations addressing transportation, parking, noise, lighting, and neighborhood conservation. McDonald acknowledged that traffic and transportation are primary concerns that require attention. To address these issues, the city intends to hire a transportation consultant with experience in designing traffic plans for large event venues.
Some residents have already expressed concerns on social media regarding traffic and parking accessibility around the proposed site. One resident noted that while the project is doable with proper planning, access to the area remains a key consideration.
