Surge Esports officially opened its doors on August 21 with a grand opening event at 280 Legacy Drive in Plano. The new gaming lounge attracted approximately 300 attendees for the block party, marking the arrival of another dedicated space for video game enthusiasts in the area.
The business joins GG EZ Gaming Cafe as one of only two establishments of its kind in Plano. Founders Umar Ali and Akber Imran launched the venue after moving to Texas from Illinois and California, respectively. They met and quickly established a partnership that combines their distinct professional backgrounds.
Ali brings experience in investment banking and consulting, along with a master’s degree from Northwestern University and an undergraduate economics degree from Loyola University. He previously worked on the strategy team for the Dallas Mavericks basketball organization. Imran owns several brick-and-mortar restaurant businesses. Ali noted that their complementary skills allow them to effectively divide tasks between storefront operations and corporate management.
The concept for Surge emerged while the founders were watching the League of Legends World Championships together at 4 a.m. They wanted to create a physical location where fans could gather to watch live esports events, similar to how people visit sports bars for traditional games. The name was inspired by a lightning strike that hit Ali’s home during early planning discussions.
The lounge features dozens of pre-installed games on high-quality computers and supports players of video game consoles, personal computers, and trading card games. The venue management platform currently hosts about 45 titles, with additional games available upon request. The founders aim to build a sustainable business model as esports cafes experience a resurgence in the United States after a period of decline during the pandemic.
