The City of Plano is organizing a series of community open houses to collect public input regarding the proposed redevelopment of The Shops at Willow Bend. The project envisions transforming the current mall site into a mixed-use development anchored by a new arena for the Dallas Stars. Residents can provide feedback through both in-person and virtual formats.
The first in-person session is scheduled for July 8 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Shops at Willow Bend. A second in-person meeting will take place on July 14 from 6 to 8 p.m. Additionally, a self-guided virtual open house will be accessible online from July 8 through July 22. These events aim to educate attendees on local zoning regulations and the city's development procedures while gathering initial public comments.
Plano Deputy City Manager Doug McDonald described the events as the initial phase of the planning process. He stated that the sessions serve as listening opportunities for city staff, the development partner Centennial, and the Dallas Stars organization. The goal is to collect resident input, which will be reviewed alongside consultants to generate future recommendations.
The July 8 event will feature distinct stations addressing transportation, parking, noise, lighting, and neighborhood conservation. McDonald acknowledged that traffic and transportation are primary concerns for the community. To address these issues, the city plans to hire a transportation consultant with experience in traffic planning for large event venues.
Some residents have already expressed concerns about accessibility and parking on social media. One attendee noted that while the project is feasible, proper planning is essential for accessibility. McDonald confirmed that tackling traffic challenges is a priority for the city moving forward.
