The Dallas Cowboys released running back Israel Abanikanda and added Tyler Goodson as the team makes changes to its rushing group following its Week 1 game against the New York Giants. Goodson joined Dallas from the Atlanta Falcons, according to the team’s announcement.
Abanikanda appeared in six NFL games before his release, all with the New York Jets during the 2023 season. He was a standout at Pitt, where he carried 239 times for 1,431 yards and 20 touchdowns in his final college season in 2022.
The roster change followed a game in which Dallas produced 69 rushing yards. Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer said the Giants’ defensive front created problems for the running game early.
“Their defensive line, our running game, there was way too much penetration early in the game,” Schottenheimer said. He also said Javonte Williams had difficulty finding room at the start before Dallas made adjustments at halftime.
