Malik Davis will miss the season after suffering a hip injury during Friday’s practice and undergoing surgery later that night, the Dallas Cowboys said. The running back is being placed on injured reserve for the year.

Davis left the workout at The Star by cart. The outdoor session was non-contact and was described as slightly more demanding than a walk-through practice.

The injury comes after Davis secured a roster spot following a close competition that continued through much of August. He had been expected to serve behind starting running back Javonte Williams after producing during training camp and the preseason.

Cowboys chief operating officer Stephen Jones said on 105.3 The Fan that the injury was “Very disappointing.” Jones also said Davis had earned his position through his work and that the team would move forward with its other running backs.

The Cowboys signed veteran Emari Demercado to provide depth and contribute on special teams. With Davis unavailable, Demercado and Israel Abanikanda, who is on the practice squad, could receive additional opportunities. Abanikanda could be elevated for a game or added to the active roster, although the team’s final plan was not yet clear.

Davis rushed for 252 yards and two touchdowns last season while backing up Williams. He joined the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2022, played in 12 games as a rookie and gained 161 rushing yards.

After spending the following two seasons on the practice squad, he returned during last year’s training camp, made the roster and recorded 103 rushing yards, his only career game with more than 100 yards.
