Florida State coach Mike Norvell said the Seminoles are preparing for Saturday’s game at No. 10 Alabama in Tuscaloosa while adjusting to Michael Alford’s firing as athletic director. The team is 1-1, and Norvell said the SMU loss did not reduce his confidence in the program.
Norvell praised Alford and his wife, Laura, and said Florida State will continue working with Bruce Warwick as interim athletic director. He called Warwick an experienced professional and said he expects him to do well. Players were off Monday, and Norvell planned to address the leadership change with them Tuesday.
Florida State will be without freshman linebackers Izayia Williams and Daylen Green for the rest of the season. Veteran linebacker Blake Nichelson is expected back this year but will miss an extended period. Norvell said the absences may open opportunities on defense and special teams.
Norvell said quarterback Ashton Daniels had a strong week in practice, especially in focusing on what he can control. He described Alabama’s defense as fast and explosive, with a larger front than last season. Florida State will need to win individual matchups, maintain offensive balance and create big plays, while also accounting for Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell’s ability to run outside the pocket.
Norvell said the Seminoles intend to use lessons from SMU against Alabama.
