Rebels Suffer Late Collapse
The No. 7 Ole Miss Rebels entered the fourth quarter with a commanding 24-3 lead, but their season took a sharp turn as they fell 34-27 to the No. 19 Texas Longhorns on Saturday. The game was played at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, Texas, in front of a crowd of 104,306 fans.
Despite controlling the tempo for much of the contest, Ole Miss was unable to hold onto their advantage, ultimately seeing the home team rally for the decisive victory. The final score left both teams with identical records of 5-2, capping a chaotic and high-scoring affair that saw the lead change hands multiple times in the latter stages.
Early Lead, Late Woes
Ole Miss started the game with momentum, as Gianni Spetic kicked a 23-yard field goal to open the scoring. However, Texas answered quickly with a 46-yard field goal by Lucas Carneiro, followed by a two-yard rushing touchdown from Arch Manning to take a 10-3 lead. The Rebels continued to struggle offensively in the first half, failing to score after that early field goal.
Texas extended their advantage in the second quarter with a 50-yard pass from Manning to Ryan Wingo, followed by a two-yard run by Michael Terry III. This sequence gave Texas a 24-3 lead heading into halftime, a deficit that seemed insurmountable for the visiting Rebels.
Texas Rally Takes Hold
The third quarter marked the turning point for the Longhorns. They began the period with a fumble recovery for a touchdown, narrowing the gap to 17-10. Ole Miss responded with a six-yard pass from Trinidad Chambliss to Horatio Fields, but Texas continued to pressure the Rebels' defense.
